The community takes part in school activities as well. The Falls Church theater group uses the school’s professional quality auditorium. The city computer terminals are hooked up to the high school’s IBM system 34 mainframe.
Thoms says the parking lots are full most nights due to the number of participants in the school’s active community education program. Credits are offered through the colleges in Northern Virginia, the University of Virginia and also George Mason’s community center courses.
Truly Talented Teachers
Both principals at George Mason have doctorate level degrees and the teachers also have education and experience beyond the average at other area schools.
Thoms points to teacher Bill Robertson as an example, a physics and chemistry teacher with a PhD from the University of Virginia who previously taught at the Air Force Academy. “A guy with those credentials,” Thoms asks, “Is he gonna end up in Rappahannock or Falls ChurcW”
Is it a matter of money? It does make a difference, Thoms says. The Falls Church teacher salary scale runs $14,000-332,600. Many teachers are at the top - they have at least 30 hours of graduate credits above a master’s degree and 14 years experience.
