Pat jokes that Christal is practically trained to run out to the middle of the street as soon as the tones go off. Patrick figuratively throws the kids out the window for Christal to catch as he takes off on a fire run. He goes on more than 70 percent of all Flint Hill calls.
The kids are 1st grader Kelly and pre-schooler Sally who attends The Child Care and Learning Center. Kelly says she plans to join the fire company as soon as she’s 16. That’s the minimum age to join, but she already helps her dad run a booth at the carnival each year.
Other activities that helped gain Patrick his award include his regular attendance at fire drills and meetings, his willingness to train other volunteers, his own continuing education at fire fighting schools and seminars through which he has reached the rank of firefighter III and his habit of constructing various time and life saving tools for the department at his own expense. Lawler says his own favorite is the “can opener” he built to rescue people trapped in crashed cars.
