Wakefield students nit the slopes with a vengeance this year. The school’s ski program, now in its eighth year, attracted 120 youngsters who recently participated in a season finale week or winter sports.
Ski club members spent three Mondays siding and then skied three days during the first week of January when Wakefield’s student body was out of school. (Other activities were provided for those who did not participate in the ski club.) On each ski day, held at Bryce Mountain, they attended ski class for 1 Vi hours, then spent the remainder practicing and free skiing.
On the final day of Winter Sports Week, races were held for all the classes, beginners through advanced. Bryce instructors set gates for beginning racers on the lower slopes, while more experienced skiers competed in a Virginia Star Giant Slalom course.
After the races, Wakefield’s ski director, Mrs. Roberta Anderson, administered the Star test, which measures skill as opposed to speed, and distributed medals to those students earning qualifying points.
•At the banquet following the races, trophies were awarded to the best in each ski class and the Wakefield Cup was presented to the boy and girl with the fastest race times.
