An 8th grade family life class studies human growth and development as well as psycho-sexual growth and the family. The course stresses communication skills, decision-making and consideration of human relationships, according to the course description. All students are scheduled for the family life course unless the student’s parents request otherwise. Few do so.
According to former school board member and past PTA president Jessie Thackrey, a sex education committee worked hard in the early 70s to come up with a model program. The committee included a sampling of educators and parents. There was “virtually no dissension” with the final program, Thackrey says, because parents’ opinions were a serious part of the planning.
Advisory committees are not just discussion groups at George Mason, Thackrey added, they are truly important in influencing school policy^
