He served as vice-chairman for the Clarke County Planning Commission for five years and is a former chairman for the county’s Cancer Crusade, vice-chairman for the local Heart Fund drive and finance chairman of the Blue Ridge Boy Scouts.
A fourth Republican mentioned as a possible candidate for the nomination is George Allan, Jr. of Charlottesville. Son of the former coach of the Washington Redskins, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1682 and re-elected this past year.
On the Democratic side, front runners most frequently mentioned as candidates are George Gilliam and A1 Smith. A Charlottesville attorney, Gilliam ran for the congressional seat 10 years ago, giving Robinson his closest race ever in the year of the Watergate scandal.
A1 Smith, the Democratic delegate from Winchester, has been one of the party’s major fund raisers for the past several years.
Also reported to be considering a run for the Democratic nomination are Culpeper attorney Butch. Davies, candidate for Virginia’s House of Delegates who was narrowly defeated by George Beard in 1979, and Lindsey Dorrier, commonwealth’s attorney in Albemarle County who unsuccessfully opposed Robinson in 1982.
