Truly Fair Rules
Student rules, rights and responsibilities are clearly set forth in the high school student handbook. Punishment for each infringement is also clearly explained and enforced.
If students are 16 or older, they may smoke if they have a permit from the administrator and have submitted ah application signed by their parents. Then they must limit their use of tobacco to the student court, on the school side of the service road, behind the gym and cafeteria or in the alcove by the drafting room.. But Thoms says only about' 20 students smoke. It simply ^^ fashionable these days.
4 . He describes another se-J * rious rule facetiously: "Thou; shalt not kiss, fondle, touch or play with snow.” That commandment easily does away with ice fights, snowballs and all sorts of slushy problems.
The thing that strikes the visitor about George Mu. son is the way everyone smiles, the friendly atmosphere like a little neighborhood.
“It smelled so good,” Thoms says, strolling into the home ec room just as though it were a favorite cousin’s kitchen. “We were walking down the hall and we smelled it.”
About ten students grin at him over spaghetti dinners. They obviously like him. “Don’t tell me this is a mid-afternoon snack,” he begs. “Tell me you guys didn’t have lunch!”
But no, they ate in the cafeteria just two hours ago. They’re growing teens. They feel about food the way the staff and administrators at George Mason feel about education:
“Too much of a good thing is terrific.”
