Former Gov. John N. Dalton’s supporters insist, and many of his Democratic opportents privately agree, that if he chooses to run for a second term as chief executive, his chances of being elected would lie somewhere between good and excellent.
There is, needless to say, universal agreement among Republicans that if he enters the race, the top spot on the 1985 ticket will be his for the asking.
But whether he will ask for it or not is the big question hanging over the GOP this winter. Upon his decision hinge the political plans, and perhaps the ultimate political futures, of a half-dozen of the state’s leading Republican politicians.
