1 he cold has lowered “degree days” - by 13 percent, Francis Updike reported. “Degree days are based on a median of 65 degrees. Within a 24 hour period, you take the maximum and minimum temperatures, add them together, divide by two and subtract the re-. suit from 65 degrees. That, gives you degree days,” he explained. “For instance, on the Saturday before the Superbowl the high was 15 and the low minus 16. Add those and you get minus one. Divide by two, you get onehalf. Round that off to zero and subtract from 65 degrees and you get 65 degree days. In December, our normal for degree days is 927. This year, we had 1,067. For January, the normal is 1,042. Last month, we had 1,207.”
Updike noted that REC does not cut off service to customers with overdue bills “if there’s any danger to anyone. . . When the temperature drops below freezing, we’re not going to disconnect power. We realize that our customers are facing higher than normal heating costs and we’re ready to make payment arrangements on an individual basis,” he said. “All a customer needs to do is contact us gt 825-8373 and we can work out a schedule.”
