few hours of life. Use an esophagael feeder. The same esophagael feeder is inexpensive and also can be used for getting an electroylte solution in calves that may be scoured or for other reasons become dehydrated. There are several good electrolyte solutions that can be mixed with warm water for this purpose that are available commercially. For a sick, dehydrated calf, milk is not what he needs. He needs fluid and electrolytes. It is a good idea to buy some electrolyte material that is available and have it on hand. Producers who don’t have that esophagael feeder should get out and buy one before they need it and then hope that they never will need it.
