Indeed, some Republican leaders will confide off the record that in their view, unless Dalton runs, a repetition of the 1981 Republican disaster may be in the making.
Waiting in the wings for the former governor to make his decision are at least two gubernatorial hopefuls, both of whom say they would not contest Dalton for the nomination. They are former Del. Wyatt Durrette, who moved last year from Fairfax to Richmond in order to have a more central location in the state from which to base his campaign. The other is 8th District Congressman Stanford Parris of Fairfax.
But Durrette has made two tries for attorney general and failed each time. In 1977 he was narrowly defeated for the party’s nomination by Marshall Coleman, who went on to win the general election. In 1981 Durette received the nomination, but was defeated in November by Democrat Gerald Baliles. As one Republican official put it, “A double defeat like that is not the world’s best basis on which to ask your party for its nomination for governor.”
