February, March and April are the months when more of the calves in commercial herds in Virginia are bom than any other period in the year. Records show that Virginia producers tend to lose five to eight percent of the calves that are bom and most of them are lost in the first few days after they are bom. Many are lost at calving time.
Eller suggests that farmers sort cows that are close to calving away from the rest of the herd at least once a week so they can be closely watched. It is particularly important to give those first-calf heifers assistance if they are having calving difficulty.
In fact, helping a firstcalf heifer, even if she may not need it, can be paying proposition in terms of getting that heifer bred back on schedule. Heifers that go through a prolonged labor period tend to come back into heat much later after calving than those that calve readily.
