During the past few years there has been a tremendous upsurge in interest in the disease of alcoholism. Where once only a few professionals and groups addressed the disease, it has now grabbed the attention of a whole spectrum of people - employers, unions, physicians, mental health counselors, insurance companies, ministers, the courts, friends and relatives of alcoholics and, of course, alcoholics themselves.
One reason for the increased interest is the growing awareness that alcoholism has had a massive impact on the quality of American life. Most Americans have read articles and heard ads on TV and radio about drunk drivers, teenage alcoholics, “care units” and the like; yet, few have any clear understanding of this baffling disease.
This point can be illustrated by considering a few examples.
