Mayor Newbill Miller told Sutherland and Sherman, “If I had the say so, I would okay the variance today.” But only a Board of Zoning Appeals can grant a variance. Miller added, and until a new town zoning ordinance is approved, there is no Board of Zoning appeals for Washington.
Miller alluded to recent controversy over the building project at The Inn in which the council’s authority to grant special use permits and variances was questioned. The new ordinance must provide for appointment of a Board of Zoning Appeals to hear such cases, he said.
