In the Republicans’ view, a liberal Democratic convention will choose Davis over the more conservative Gerald Baliles and Del. Richard Bagley of Hampton, the third man in the (at the moment) three-way race for the nomination. It should be added that the GOP theory’ of this outcome is not universally shared by more objective political observers around the state.
It does, however, make a persuasive arguing point especially if Dalton is vulnerable to persuasion on the subject.
But is he? He has already been governor once, and his place in the history of the Old Dominion is secure. He has apparently made an excellent recovery from surgery for lung cancer last year, but an experience like that can make one very selective about life’s priorities. He would have to abandon a private career which he clearly finds satisfying. And finally he would sacrifice income from all sources running into seven figures if he should serve four years as governor.
Will he go for it? Logic suggests that he will not, and Dalton is a logical man. Still, a call to “save the world” can summon up all kinds of illogical loyalties.
The answer, I suppose, will depend on the degree to which Dalton believes the world, as well as the Virginia GOP, is endangered.
But when he has sized it all up, the admittedly iffy guess'here is that his answer will be “No.”
