Grass Tetany
Peak grass tetany season arrives in late winter and early spring. Cow-calf operators need to be sure that a steady source of magnesium is available to their cows through this critical period.
Mixtures of magnesium oxide and salt on a one-toone basis will do the job. A more palatable mixture is one made of equal parts magnesium oxide, trace mineralized salt, dicalcium phosphate and some palatable feed such as soybean or cottonseed meal or even finely ground shelled com.
Provide on a free choice basis whether one of the homemade mixtures above or a commercial mixture containing magnesium is used.
