Golden Delicious: This apple is a favorite for salads because its flesh doesn’t discolor as quickly after cutting. Good for cooking and eating out of hand, and is also a good pie apple. Fairly large and pale yellow in color, oblong in shape. The Golden Delicious is sweet and juicy. Stayman: Generally believed to be the best all-purpose apple, it is good for eating or cooking. The Stayman is medium to large in size with dull red skin, at time streaked with green. It is fairly round and very firm and its flesh is tart and juicy, with a crunchy texture. Jonathan: Like the Stayman, this is an all-purpose apple, but it is an earlier variety than the Stayman, generally ripening in September. It is small to medium in size, with a rounded shape, perfect for lunch boxes because of its size. The flesh of the Jonathan is tart, crisp and juicy. Thq skin is red.,with patches of green. _ Rome: Considered to be the best apple variety for baking and is excellent for pies. The Rome is round and squatty, sits easily in pans for baking. It has red skin and slightly tart, firm and crisp flesh. Medium to large in size. York: Another excellent cooking apple and also a good winter eating apple. The York is particularly good when used to make applesauce. It is medium to large in size with full red color and a flat, lopsided shape.
