cussed plans for the elementary school with Joe Hufftnan of Virginia’s Department of Rehabilitation Services prior to completing the improvements there. “He made several recommendations. We followed through on aO of them at the elementary school,’’ Mr. Campbell said.
He said plans for the high school are the same-to get an evaluation from a state official before proceeding with the work. Moving forward in this manner will ensure that any changes made are up to code, Mr. Campbell said. He noted that be expected recommendations for the high school to be minor because the facility is on one level and probably won’t require curb cuts.
Presently, no handicapped students attend the high school Still, Mr. Campbell reconfirmed the commitment to bring the high school into compliance as soon as possible. “I think any time you’re talking about a public building...we certainly want to look toward fiiture needs, too.”
Remodeling Part Of Plan
During the meeting, the supervisors also discussed renovation of the county courthouse with Architect Warren McNamee of Front Royal Bringing the courthouse into compliance with handicapped regulations also was discussed. ' 1
Because of* a second-story courtroom, supervisors will consider acces• ability. They discussed the possibility of a stair glide and asked about the cost of an elevator. Mr. McNamee said he had information about handicapped regulations that he would mail to Clerk Bruce. He said he will present all courthouse renovation proposals to the building committee once drafted.
“We’re not talking (about) tearing down the beauty of this county- just making it accessible to the handicapped,” Mrs. Combe offered. l_
