Zale, who has “an extremely sensitive back,” the result of an automobile accident, began making ftitons after she discovered the allnatural mattress was the only thing she could sleep on comfortably. “I was like the princess and the pea-I couldn’t sleep on anything,” she says.
When Zale discovered that Charlottesville and D.C. were the closest places to purchase a Alton, she knew there would be a market. She adds that her fiitons generally are thicker than others available commercially, with stronger seams and fabrics to complement the customer’s fiirnishings.
The Alton, Zale explains, isn’t just for people with bad backs. Today, she says the versatile mattresses also are being used as furniture. It takes Zale two days to make a futon: ”1 do them on custom order,” she notes, “and I keep at least one out (for display).”
