In December, 1983, I had the opportunity to go Airing with members of the Virginia Air National Guard, as a guest of Capt. Gerrish. The idea of having a civilian journalist accompany the pilots on a mission is not new; newswriters are among the few civilians allowed to do so.
The process of securing approval took several months, and involved getting permission from the top. Anything to do with the operation of Virginia Air Guard jets is handled on a strictly no-nonsense basis, and while the safety record is very good, there is always risk involved - especially with an untrained civilian passenger on board.
