pies who favor letting as many welfare babies as possible be born and then denying them public money for food after they arrive; by affluent young people who have never seen, and prefer not to see, the proverbial other side of the tracks; and by supplyside economists who really believe that the best way to feed the birds is to give the horses more grain.
All of this is mighty appealing to many Virginians who, with their forebears since Appomattox, have had an abiding fear of anything which disturbs the status quo.
This fear has been carefully nurtured by many of our institutionalized opinion makers. For example, the Richmond Newspapers, for generations, have encouraged it. Like an unremitting Chinese water torture, their conservative editorials have dripped down upon their readers until, for many of them, their social and political perspectives have atrophied to the size of a pea.
The conservatives’ all-purpose defense of their view is supremely uncomplicated.
They simpley call those who don’t airree with them liberals.
