By GEORGE BOWLES
Time once vu when the wont things you could call ■ person brought into question the marifji status of his parents, or, by implication, attributed canine characteristics to his mother.
But no more.
At least not in Virginia, and specifically not in Virginia’s political drclee.
No, all of the opprobria of the past become as words from a Sunday School lesson compared to one which, in recent years, has emerged as the supreme insult, the ultimate put-down and the passport to outer darkness for the hapless public figure to whom it might become attached.
That word, of course, is liberal.
Aspiring politicians cringe before it like Dracula before the cross or the Wicked Witch of the West before a pail of water.
To be cried out against as a liberal in Virginia is the political equivalent of being denounced as a handmaiden of Satan in 17th century Salem. If the charge can be made to stick, a burning at the electoral stake is just as inevitable.
