Capt. Gerrish, who joined the 149th in 1980, earned his wings in 1971 in the regular U-S. Air Force pilot program, and his active duty assignment was flying the supersonic F-106 Delta Dart interceptor. He returned to Virginia after leaving the service in 1974, and applied for a pilot’s slot in the Virginia Air Guard. The waiting list was five years long.

In the meantime, Mr. Gerrish went to work, first in sales and marketing, and later as an account executive for Wheat, First Securities in Warrenton. He also went hack to school, earning an MBA, and later a degree in Financial Planning.
