• Republicans Sweep 7th And Beyond
President Ronald Reagan swept the Seventh District, the state and the nation in Tuesday’s elections, netting 625 electoral votes, the largest number in history (Franklin D. Roosevelt captured 623 in 1936).
The president only led the pace in the Commonwealth, however, where Senator John Warner also won by a landslide over Democratic challenged Edythe Harrison, and D. French Slaughter, Jr. handily defeated Democrat Lewis Costello and Independent R. E. Frazier to earn the Seventh District Congressional seat.
Reagan and Warner became the first candidates in Virginia history to net more than one million votes each, 63 percent of more than 2 million cast statewide.
Hationwide, President Reagan won reelection by garnering a majority of the popular vote in 49 states; Democrat Walter Mondale won in his home state of Minnesota and in the District of Columbia.
Two Virginia constitutional amendments passed by more than 2 to 1 margins; Clifford Latham and Gordon Thornhill netted big numbers in becoming Soil and Water Conservation District directors.
