Wildlife Refuge

Recently, the Cape Charles Air Force Base on the Eastern Shore of Virginia was transferred to the Fish & Wildlife Service to serve as a wildlife refuge and training center.

The creation of this center will provide protection for some of our most prized wildlife, will put an abandoned federal facility to good use, and will open up new economic opportunities.

The Eastern Shore is richly blessed with unspoiled areas of great natural beauty, and is one of the most important habitats of waterfowl and shore birds alone the East Coast. I believe we owe it to ourselves and our children to protect and preserve these precious natural wonders.

In addition, the establishment of a wildlife center will utilize a valuable facility which now stands idle. The transformation of this Air Force Base into a wildlife refuge allows the federal government to make the best possible use of its resources.

Finally, and most importantly, this refuge and training center will be an important operation of the Fish & Wildlife Service. People will come to Virginia from around the country to train at this facility. People will be introduced to the beauty and recreatio^d opportunities available in Virginia. All this means substantial economic benefits for our citizens. I am pleased to have played a role in helping to bring this facility to our state.
