President Reagan today signed United States Senator Paul Trible’s bill which will lead to greater commercialization of space.
The bill, which passed Congress October 10th, provides for one-stopshopping for commercial space launch activities by giving ail licensing authority to the Department' of Transportation. ' <
“The current approval process for
private space launjfr. liberations is a regulatory maze involving 18 federal agencies, and 22 different statutes,” Trible said.
It is estimated that commercial ■pace launch activities will be worth $200 billion and could generate 10 million jobs by the end of the century.
In addition, space promises other benefits. In the zero gravity of space, new drugs can be developed in substantial quantities that hold the promise of wiping out nuyor diseases such as diabetes..
“Exploiting the vast economic potential of space requires that the federal government be a partner, not an obstacle. This legislation is important in opening the final frontier of space to private enterprise and will lead to jobs and economic opportunity as we approach the 21st century,” Trible said.*
