The autumn leaves that add such color to the landscape also are an excellent source of organic matter for use in vegetable gardens, in flower beds, and around trees and shrubs.
As a mulch, leaves can stop the heaving of perennial flowers because of the ground’s freezing and thawing. Store the leaves until the ground is frozen. Then apply a layer six to eight inches deep so that you can maintain uniform soil temperature.
Placed around young trees and shrubs, leaves will prevent grass and weeds from competing for the space as well as protect trees from close clipping when mowing.
Be careful to leave a four-to-sixinch space between the trunk and the mulch throughout the winter. Otherwise, mice may build a home against the tree trunk and damage the bark.
