Captain William Keim (U.S. Navy retired) of Amissville has been named Wildlife Conservationist of the Year by the Virginia Wildlife Federation. Keim received the award, a buffalo statue, on October 20 in Roanoke. The award is given for “outstanding accomplishment during the year which has made significant contribution to the management and restoration of wildlife,” as written in a Virginia Wildlife Federation brochure.
Keim was nominated fin* the award by Dr. Fete Bromley, a professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. In the letter of nomination, Bromley wrote that in this year Keim has planted 40 acres of wildlife food strips on his 215- acre Quail Call Farm. Keim has also created a fifth waterfowl management pond, installed new or maintained
24 waodduck nest boxes, provided nesting sites for three pairs of Canada geese, managed for wildlife between the rows of 40 acres of Christmas tree!, and drained, fertilized and planted two ponds with Japanese millet for fall waterfowl use.
Bromley wrote that Quail Call Farm supports quail, wild turkey, whitetailed deer, woodducks, Canada geese, hawks, owls, foxes, song birds, ruffed grouse, mourning doves, and during migration, mallards, black ducks, and woodcock. When Keim bought the property in 1960, the land
