A unique theatrical event is taking place in Washington, Virginia’s Gay St. Theatre, on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. Emily Dickinson is coming to town - in the form of a one-woman play entitled “The Belle of Amherst”. The show is based on the letters and poems of one of America’s greatest writers.
The reclusive poet, who scandalized her new England neighbors and wrote amazing poetry, will be portrayed by Dianne Douves, driginally of Washington, D.C.’s Source Theater.
Ms. Couves’ performance has been favorably compared to Julie Harris’ Broadway rendition of the same play. Washington Post critic Lloyd Grove stated, “Ms. Couves’ Dickinson has wit and wisdom. The play is thoroughly appealing. . . Everything you could hope for.”
“The Belle of Amherst” is sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community (RAAC), a community, volunteer organization. Ms. Couves will also be appearing in Rappahannock County’s public schools as part of RAAC’s efforts to provide cultural opportunities to area youth.
Admission to the evening performance is $6 for adults ($5.00 for RAAC members) and $3 for students and senior citizens. Call 675-3193 for reservations. Tickets will be on sale at the library, Middle St. Gallery and Brambles Cafe.
