Residents of Hampton District reacted favorably overall November 1 during a community meeting on the county’s proposed zoning ordinance. About 80 people attended the meeting, the second of a series scheduled to take place by magisterial district through mid-December.
Residents commented favorably on the proposed ordinance in several areas, among them:
• Controlled growth. Lee Bird said the proposed zoning ordinance would be good for directing growth. Bird said the purpose of good zoning was “not to prohibit or limit growth, but to direct it to appropriate areas.” He said the proposed zoning ordinance provides for small population centers “here and there” in the county.
Nels Parson called the 1973 Zoning Ordinance “inadequate” in regard to controlling growth experienced by surrounding counties. Parson said “sheer luck,” not the 73 Ordinance, had protected Rappahannock thus far.
