The board considered three possible locations, he said: One behind the elementary school, one in StonewallHawthome District and the third on Route 621. The others were not suitable, he said. The first would have required building a road to the site; the second the supervisors believed was a poor location and possibly the wrong soil type. He said the site selected was agreed upon as the best. "We will have to improve the road that leads into the site,” he said.

The site selected is more than twice the size and double the price the supervisors originally had intended. The first site believed by the supervisors to be appropriate was approximately 60 acres; $90,000 was budgeted this fiscal year for the purchase of landfill property. "We knew it was a little more than we needed,” Chairman Latham said, adding however, that the site could last for generations. He said the size also would provide for an adequate buffer, which should cut down on objections to the location.

Chairman Latham said discussion of the aquisition took place in executive session because it would have been difficult to discuss alternatives available to the board in public session. He said he’d have had no problem discussing the landfill location in public session if he thought it could be accomplished. "Something had to be done sooner or later,” he said. He said he saw no harm in the discussion taking place in executive session, which is allowed by law.

Supervisor Lane also said no decision was made by the board until it voted in public session foDowing the executive session. "I feel sort of ripped up. On the one hand, I’m relieved, I feel we have a goo^site. On the other hand, I’m torn (because of the concerns of property owners).”
