The following morning, which was her birthday, she read an article about Hospice of the Rapidan, Inc. in the Star Exponent.
“I have to go,” she recalled telling her husband, Eugene. “This was my birthday present to myself,” she said.
Now volunteers for the hospice program serving the five-county area, Mrs. Robson and Mrs. VanWambeck have joined a small, but growing, group of individuals who want to help. Said Mrs. VanWambeck: “I’m at a time in my life when I’m thinking, What would I do, if....’ I care. I hope there will be someone there to help me through if I need it.” Added Mrs. Rob* son: “I think His been a good expert* ence. The people involved have formed a beautiful, cohesive group. ”
Although Mrs. VanWambeck has been a member of Jfe board for Hospice of the Rapidan', Inc. for nearly a year, she just completed the hospicevolunteer training course with Mrs. Robson and eight others. It was the second time the course had been offered.
"This is a very gutsy thing. The course brings out some things that are very difficult for people to deal with,” Mrs. VanWambeck offered.
The course agenda includes sessions on listening, perspectives on dying, family dynamics and home visitations. Participants make one home visitation during the training; Mrs. Robson visited a family in Rappahannock. “There’s a need in the county,” she said.
Hospice of the Rapidan, Inc. is in need of volunteers for a variety of purposes, not just home visitations, Mrs. VanWambeck explained. In fact, Mrs. VanWambeck will concentrate her volunteer time at the Hospice on fund raising and helping Coordinator Bankhead with administrative duties while Mrs. Robson will work on education and public relations.
