When residents asked about the - proposed landfill location midway into ■ the supervisors’ regular meeting, Supervisor Nelson Lute confirmed that the county had attempted to purchase ’ some land, but had been turned down ‘ by the owners who had decided not to sell the property for use as a landfill.
Board Chairman Richard Latham said that the board had "nothing to report on the landfill more than Mr. Lane has said,” at that point in the meeting. Chairman Latham said residents could address the board further upon conclusion of the regular meeting.
Residents waited, then asked more questions. Supervisor Lane, who with Supervisor Hubert Gilkey III made up the landfill subcommittee, responded to each.
"The present owner doesn’t want to sell. What’s next? Are there other sites or will you pursue this?” one resident asked. “(We’re) scheduled to look at a place as we leave here (today),” Supervisor Lane responded.
When asked again the status of the proposed site, Supervisor Lane said the owners elected not to “voluntarily” sell it as a landfill. He added that the supervisors could condemn the property.
