Postal Rate Hike
The postal rate for standard mail will be increased from 20 cents to 22 cents beginning on February 17.
• Slaughter To Hold Town Meeting
Weather permitting, Seventh District Congressman French Slaughter will hold a town meeting on Saturday, February 16 at 1 p.m. The meeting will in Washington, Va. at the courthouse.
• Washington Birthday Closings
The following offices and businesses will be closed on Monday, February 18 in observance of George Washington’s Birthday.

• Former Park Employee Honored
William M. Loftis, Jr. (Bill), former Assistant Superintendent of Shenandoah National Park, has received a Meritorious Service Award from the Department of Interior, National Park Service. The award is the second highest award given by the Department to its managerial employees.
• Public Meeting To Support Schools
All interested community members, parents and teachers are invited to a meeting on February 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the RCES library to engage in a dialogue about how the education of Rappahannock’s young people can best be supported. The issue of the 1985-86 budget will be addressed, along with any other concerns.
• Alcohol Awareness Conference
Beginning Sunday, February 17, at 6 p.m. the Community Youth Group sponsored by the Washington Baptist and Trinity Episcopal Churches will sponsor a series of discussions relating to the rising problem of teenage alcoholism. The purpose of these discussions will be to give parents and teens the necessary information on alcohol so that responsible dialogue and decisions can be made in the home concerning alcohol. The discussions will continue each Sunday night through March 3. This conference is open to the public.
