To the editor:
For the Board of Supervisors to announce publicly in January that they were asking the commonwealth's attorney to frame a resolution or ordinance banning the spreading of human sludge on Rappahannock fields and then to back down from this decision and temporize at their February meeting may prove to be most unfortunate. This action will surely convey to the officers of Biogro and other ‘honey dippers’ an impression of weakness and indecision as to our determination to protect the public health of our county from their greedy onslaughts.
I urge the supervisors to adopt an ordinance or resolution at their next meeting along the following lines:
“The Board of Supervisors of Rappahannock County, lacking sufficient and creditable evidence to the contrary, is concerned that the application of human sludge to lands in this county may pose a threat to local public health and have a negative impact on the environment of the county. Therefore, be it resolved that, for the time being and pending further action by this Board on the subject, such application of human sludge to land in Rappahannock county is banned and prohibited.” (Text to be modified as required by legal advice acceptable to the supervisors but with the general sense and intent remaining intact).
