I’m sure I join with many people of Rappahannock in welcoming our distinguished new neighbor, Richard Viguerie. In reading the entertaining interview in last week’s News, it struck me that this might be an appropriate time to comment on one of Mr. Viguerie’s themes, by way of welcome, you might say. It is a simple theme, but very effective, that we need to get government off our backs in order for things to generally improve.
Mr. Viguerie stated in the interview, “The reason that we have this great and wonderful country, the reason that we feed a third of the world, is because of free enterprise; it’s not because of government. Government doesn’t proauce anything. We need to get government basically out of the way.”
We should look at the other important contributions to the freedom and excellent standard of living which we enjoy. These include the Magna Carta and the entire tradition of legal and political development which we inherited from England, upon which distinctly American features were constructed, including our constitution and representative form of government. Also consider our uniquely advantageous geographical position, generally benign climate and the storehouse of incredible natural wealth and resources which we took away from the indigenous peoples already here.
