Thornton of Sperryville has received his discharge from the U.S. Army after more than four years of active service. Mr. Thornton has been awarded two D.F.C. medals and two Bronze Stars; an Air Medal with a V Device and an Army Commendation with a V Device; a Purple Heart and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He has received 46 Air Medals and an Expeditionary Medal.
