Referendum is within the realm of pure democracy where everything is voted on by everyone all the time. Granted, referendum deals only with one issue or even with one point, but all the same, it is a form of pure democracy.

The point is, referendum belongs to a type of government that is distinctly different from our own.

Within a representative form of government such as ours, a call for a referendum puts our elected officials in an awkward position. To them it signifies that the people, who entrusted them with the role to govern, are temporarily revoking their license to govern. This is a breach of trust -- the breaking of a pact.

In electing representatives to manage government affairs for us, we give up the right to rule directly at our pleasure. That is not so bad.

With their ultimate authority, the people still have many ways to influence government.
