They went to the Royal Street restaurant, ordered many fine dishes, and ate and talked throughout the night. The next day, they were married and then they returned to the young man’s home in the East. Before the summer was over, though, the girl died. At the beginning of the next Mardis Gras, the owner of the Royal Street restaurant received a check and instructions to decorate the same table that the young couple had used, and that the same food be served. Every year after that for more than 20 years, a check would be sent and the food would be served to an empty table.
Aiter the man died, the owner of the restaurant received instructions from an attorney that the dinner was to be served as before every year during Mardis Gras for as long as the restaurant remained in business.
“Many people believe this is only a fable, but it is the story they tell, and something of the kind must have occurred, for every Mardis Gras night, if you go to this restaurant, you’ll see a waiter setting places for two. There are always flowers on the table and decorations in carnival colors. Then, silently and seriously, a waiter slowly serves the fine foods and wines of an elaborate dinner for two.”
