February is Virginia Heart Month, and that means that it is time for the Heart Association fund drive. This year, the Rappahannock Unit of the American Heart Association has set a goal of $7,200 that they will try to collect before the end of the month. “The money we collect here doesn’t just go out of the county and we never see it again,” said Steve Scoggin, residential campaign chairman. “We are trying to start a heart health education program in the schools which would include instruction on good nutrition, the need for exercise and the dangers of smoking and other causes of heart disease. ” Besides the residential campaign when volunteers knock on doors asking for donations, the local Heart Association will also be sponsoring a jump rope for heart activity at Rappahannock Elementary School and Wakefield School to raise funds. A cookbook of heart healthy meals can also be purchased for $4.50 from Lillian Aylor, Association president. “A percentage of the funds raised will go towards heart disease re• wftarch,” said Scoggin. “Statistics show that heart disease is on the decline, but it is still the number one cause of death in the nation.” The Rappahannock Heart Association has 20 to 25 board members.
