Waste Disposal Update
John E. Driver, assistant city manager of Harrisonburg, recently wrote to Supervisor Nelson Lane and said “I will be elad to meet with you most any day to discuss the possibility of the City of Harrisonburg disposing of Rappahannock County’s refuse in our Resource Recovery Facility. I feel that we could handle your amount of refuse with no difficulties.”
Driver was responding to a letter from Lane in which Lane expressed 1) a favorable opinion of Harrisonburg’s plant and 2) an interest in meeting “...to see if the numbers would make sense for both parties.”
Also, the Solid Waste Disposal Committee will hold a meeting on Wednesday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Courthouse. The public is encouraged to attend.
• Diabetes Tests
The Rappahannock Lions Club is sponsoring diabetes tests to be conducted at the Rappahannock Medical Center beginning April 9. The test will be free and is for people age 18 and over.
Test? will be by appointment and will involve a prick of the finger. It is important that the person to be tested does not eat before the test, and for that reason it is recommended that the appointment be made in the mornings. Appointments may be made by calling or coming by the Clinic.
Diabetes is a disorder caused by an insulin deficiency, which prevents the body from using sugar for energy. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, decreases life expectancy by approximately one-third and 50 percent of diabetics do not know they have the disease.
The tests will be free, but if diabetes is diagnosed, any treatment will have to be paid for.
• Unemployment Rates Up
The Culpeper branch of the Virginia Employment Commission has released a bulletin showing that unemployment rates in all counties of planning district 9 (PD9) increased from December of 1984 to January of 1985. PD9 comprises Rappahannock, Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison, and Orange counties.
In December of 1984 the number of unemployed in Rappahannock totaled 147, in January of 1985 the figure rose to 179. That is a jump in percentage from 5.6 to 6.7.
In general, the commission attributes the rise in unemployment to “seasonal cutbacks in construction, and other industries affected by inclement weather.”
94.2%
