Four of Washington’s Town Council members voted to allow an addition to Trinity Episcopal Church in a short session on Wednesday, March 13. A variance for the addition had been issued last year by a previous council.
The variance was issued for a 23 foot addition to the church’s parish hall that will make the building even along the front. “The ordinance did not have any mechanics at that time to grant a variance because we did not have a BZA and only a BZA can grant a variance,” council member Newbill Miller said. Miller said that the 1984 council gave the church permission to go ahead with the addition.
“They (church representatives) came in for a building permit the other day, and the zoning administrator had some problem with it,” Miller said. “I’d like to see us reaffirm the approval of the addition.”
