Board members then made their own suggestions for further fringe benefits for the system's employees. The Board examined retirement payments and insurance payments in an attempt to find an equitable way of offering more benefits to all employees and how more benefits would affect salary proposals.
Oliver said that he had calculated the difference between a dollar spent on direct salary increase as compared to a dollar spent in a tax deductible fringe benefit program. He said that an employee would actually get an average of 64 cents out of every dollar that the county would have to pay $1.07 for.
“A dollar given in tax deductible fringe benefits is a dollar credit and a dollar spent,” Oliver said. “It costs 67 percent more to give an increase in salary compared to an increase in benefits.”
Teachers in the county are not being compensated as they should be, Oliver said, and to help both the teachers and the county he said that an increase in fringe benefits would be the answer.
