Dognapping epidemic

Fauquier County is in the throes of a dognapping epidemic, according to local animal welfare officials.
Pet owners from across the county have reported the strange and mysterious disappearance of their animals, said Gail Muller, manager of the Fauquier Animal Shelter. She and Mary Warner, president of the non-profit organization, Action 81, that monitors dognapping throughout the country, believe these pets have been stolen and will wind up in research facilities and schools.
Since December, Fauquier pet owners have reported the disappearance of 184 animals. Only 46 of those have been found and returned, Ms. Muller said.
