Alter our ratner unspectacular eifort on the range Saturday, it was decided that a little friendly competition was in order for later that night, after everyone was good and tired. So after another marathon session lasting until almost 10 p.m. we had an opportunity to try our hand at 10 meter air rifle and air pistol, plus a mean little event called the running boar. We teamed up in units, representing our home counties, and fired away.
Sunday morning started much the same as Saturday, except that everyone was more tired than the day before. Sunday was a recap of the weekend with an opportunity to discuss what our units were involved with at home.
Here in Fauquier County we are blessed with some really great kids, and have built a shooting program around what the kids wanted. In addition to what the kids wanted, the Virginia Game and Fish Commission has come up with a terrific competition, the first annual Hunter Education Championship. Composed of five events: shooting the bow and arrow, small bore rifle, shotgun, map and compass course and a written test on ethics, law and wildlife identification, etc.
The Virginia Championship will be held on May 4, at the Izaak Walton League Park in Midlothian. Our 4-H Fauquier Shooting Sports Club will send two teams of four or five competitors each. We believe that they possess the skill and discipline to fairly take on the whole state and maybe go on to represent Virginia in the National Hunter Education Championship in Chestertown, Md., in July.
Our 4-H weekend concluded with fond farewells, a lot of new friends, even a little newly acquired skill with a shotgun.
As I said in opening this column, this is just as much your column as it is mine. So please let me know what you want and 111 do my best to give it to you. Also, if you have an upcoming event and want everyone to know all about it, let me know and we’ll tell the world about it.
If you catch a good fish or stringer of fish let me know, or a spectacular buck or whatever your particular sport is, if you are doing it, chances are that someone wants to know all about it. . . and I am certain that J do!
