Why?
The answer is unsatisfactory, because the fact is no one really knows why.
Nettles cited two possibilites 1) the gloom of the nuclear age, which gives rise to the unseemly knowledge that missiles may obliterate the world within any given ten minutes and 2) the increase in drug and alcohol abuse.
The reasons for a national increase in suicide cannot be pinpointed. More, however, is known about the symptoms that surround a suicidal individual.
Asked if depression was considered the cause of suicide, Nettles said no. “Depression is closely associated with suicide, but it is not the cause. There isn’t a single cause. ”
Is there a type of person who commits suicide?
“Suicide-type research hasn’t been successful...but most common is a person with a long history of depression, a low self-esteem,” basically a person who lacks confidence in his or her ability to perform in an appropriate role.
The suicidal person has intense feelings of hopelessness and believes that matters will only get worse. The typical situation for a successful suicide is created by such crises as: 1) the break up of a marriage or relationship 2) the death of a loved one 3) physical, sexual, or emotional abuse by a parent, guardian, or other significant person 4) difficulty with peers 5) fear of being alone 6) being arrested or jailed 7) use of alcohol or drugs and 8) the loss of a job.
Common among teens, said Nettles, is accidental suicide, which results from a half-hearted attempt or gesture intended to send a message to
someone else. The person was trying desperately to attract the attention of another, usually a family member, in the hopes that that person would see ‘‘what’s going on in my life.” They don’t mean to kill themselves, said Nettles, they mean to hurt themselves, but it goes too far.
