When watering, I found that the chicks frequently drowned in my watering trays because of their tiny size. To solve this problem I filled the trays with gravel which prevented the birds from falling in when they drank.
One other major problem I experienced was cannibalism. I lost over half of my quail because they would eat each other’s feet. After checking into it, I found that the use of a colored light would stop these cannibalistic behavii rs. The reason for this is that once a chick has a noticeable spot of blood on him, it gives the others a spot to peck at, therefore, colored lights will help hide the spot.
Once your quail have grown all their feathers, a process that takes several weeks, you can start reducing the temperature five degrees every three to five days. Slowly taking the temperature down helps the birds to adapt to life outside the brooder.
Now that they are off artificial heat, you can turn the chicks loose in a predator proof cage. Avoid using cages that are too small to accomodate the population of your hatch to ensure maximum survival rate.
These quail will be fully grown in a couple of weeks after introducing them to the outside enviro&paent. As for me, the mortality rate for my quail was high, and those that lived escaped from my cage. Knowing what I now know, I intend to try and raise a few more quail to release into the wild.
