Truck ban up for review
Will the ban against large trucks on Route 17 between Warrenton r id Marshall and on Route 15 between Haymarket and Buckland be lifted or won’t it?
Only Highway Commissioner Harold C. King knows for sure — and he’s not talking.
At least he’s not talking until 10 a.m. Thursday when the Highway Commission meets to discuss the ban on the 10.35-mile stretch of narrow, winding highway.
“In order to protect the lives of the traveling public,” Commissioner King announced Nov. 15 large trucks would be prohibited from the two-lane highway from Nov. 19 to Feb. 17.
He extended the ban in January to April 3 to give highway officials time to complete and analyze traffic and accident studies.
A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit against the highway department brought by nine Fauquier County truckers and farmers because he realized the ban was a temporary solution, said an assistant attorney general.
The farmers said the ban is an economic hardship.
