Participating in couponing and refunding may initially require much time and effort. For some individuals, these activities have become a major aspect of their lives with involvement in refund newsletters, swap parties and other related activities. For those who do not have the time for clipping, filing and trading, couponing and refunding may not be a feasible method for saving on the grocery bill. Shoppers with considerable time limitations may not be able to spend the time at the checkout counter for redeeming coupons also. Other considerations are that coupons are mostly for processed items (coffee, cereals, flour, etc.) which are only about ten percent of the food budget. Most other savings are on household cleaning products and health and beauty aids.

Many times the price of a national brand with the coupon is equal to the price of the store or generic brands. Manufacturers are less competitive today and offer fewer promotional advantages originally associated with couponing.
