even getting out of their vehicles. I heard of one trapper who had a 70-mile trap line. We used to find snares around the kennels too.”
The value of fox pelts has also gone down radically in the last three years, helping to further reduce the number of trappers, according to game wardens. Fox pelts now bring about $20, compared to the $60 or more they brought a few years ago.
During the deer hunting season, which also overlaps the foxhunting season, many foxes fall prey to trigger-happy hunters. Sometimes the dead foxes are left where they fall to be discovered later by members of the hunt.
“I know we lose some (foxes) to hunters,” says Oliver Brown, huntsman for the Rappahannock Hunt. “I think its more than we want to believe.”
Foxes in some areas have problems in addition to the threat from trappers and hunters.
“One of our problems has been with stray and wild dogs running lose,” says James Atkins, huntsman of the Old Dominion Hunt. “They keep the foxes thinned out in our territory.” •
