If you are one of the top 50 finalists, you will be invited by mail to pack up your cooking gear and prepare your bowl of red on a camp stove on the streets of downtown Roanoke. Contestants come with wild and crazy costumes, booth displays and bizarre ingredients which they are sure are the winning ingredients. Past contestants have prepared their brews flanked by ambulances, hot tubs, wrecked stock cars, chili chuckwagon jeeps, Navy recruiters, clowns, break dancers, outhouses, motorcycles and blue grass music!
The first place chilihead will receive $500, a trophy and the chance to compete in the World Championship Cookoff held in California in the fall. Prizes will also be awarded for the best booth, best showmanship, the cooks that traveled the farthest and many other categories. The Virginia Pork Industry Commission awards the Hog Heaven Award to the cook that makes the best use of pork products in their recipe. And, because beef iB in practically every chili, the Virginia Cattlewomen give the People’s Choice Award for the batch the spectators like the best.
